i think the batterys go in the front between the plate on top and button in front.
it looks like there s a grip to take the top off

Yes, it uses batteries. And you don't have to "connect" it to something. But you normally attach it to something using the magnet on it.

This device would be something you might attach to a car for example. Though it has nothing to do with driving it, or the performance of it.
