Q: how do fabric softener sheets (for in the dryer) get the lint off clothes (they say they do on the box, and they seem to work...but how?)

A: I'm not sure either....they DO work, though! My guess is either some sort of electrical charge that draws the lint to it (think static electricity) or maybe some sort of chemical reaction when the fabric softener heats up that draws the lint to it. I'm just guessing though!! Sorry!
