(must be an American thing... a security blanket is what a child carries around & holds while they suck thier thumb. Some even suck on the blanket. Moms can go nutz trying to break them of the habit of having one before they go to kindergarten. It is called a "security blanket" because the child feels secure with it....to give it up is to lose security).
