doubling down is one of the few times in blackjack you can increase your original bet. If you originally bet 1.00 and you would tell the dealer you are doubling down and put in another 1.00. You only get 1 card to go with the first 2 cards however. Like GH1 said a 5 and 6 is a great hand to double down on hoping your 1 card will be a 10.
