White square icons?
The green bar indicates proximity to a pumpkin.
The red bar indicates proximity to a monster; when you hit a monster you lose a pumpkin and get temporary immunity in your new life (you become transparent).
So the red hearts are extra lives.
The yellow stars give you temporary immunity from the monsters.
The small icons that look like paper lanterns "illuminate" the entire maze.
