Yeah, the game creator made a logical mistake assuming that players do it right from the beginning...
But gladly it's a short game, so it doesn't take long to replay.

Once you use an item it disappears from the gray inventory box...or does it? If you click on an empty box where something was it reappears in the zoom screen.

pfft! I have no confidence in that numpad thing. Do I have to place it somewhere before entering the digits?

You need to pick it up, then zoom it in, and enter the code.
Have you considered all 3 hints for the correct code?

yes but the paper hint is hard to read. I believe mine says

+5114=key

If I remember correctly, the first digit is

not 5 but 3

So the final code is

3471
