I think you're talking about the items that are used as

ears. I think I had to click on the nose of the animal to put them

I think you need to do these things:

give animal nose (cut out holes with knife)
give animal ears
give animal milk
put bell on animal
color animal in black hole
use hammer on animal (hammer from puzzle)
use knife on animal

me too, it was a real bitch, everytime i used spmething it disappeared and with little effect, that i could see. finally figured out the puzzle and lost the hammer!
