You don't need the axe... inventory needs to be completely empty

Apparently, it becomes useful after you've

completed the pink puzzle

I haven't gotten there yet... I put the

bucket on top of the walker

& I still can't get the vent

I finished the puzzle and nothing is happening... all pieces in place, but it is just there and I am getting no new access...I tried pressing the button and got nothing. any thoughts?
