You're right!!

The scissors DO get you that!! You need to use them on the cabinet by the door. The upper portion can be opened if you cut the thingy keeping them closed.

those letters in the square spell submarine... put them in the right order. so s=1 u=2 etc.
enter that code in the black box.

To open the box:

put the letters in order to spell the name of the item in the drawer. Then put the number of each letter in the box in the order shown in the top drawer. To start: s=1 u=2, etc

Hope this makes sense.

I´m stuck there as well bandmama.. Thought the word in the book was a real word with missing letters, but after a lot of searching I don't think it could be a proper word at all!

Got it!! the letters stand for numbers! Z=0 O=1 etc...
So the squares represent two for six and eight. now just replace them with the correct coloue and you have the four letter code!

If that's too difficult:

The letters in the book are the first letter of each number 0 thru 9 if you spell them out.

Also, there is another hint in post #12.
