You have to first place

the two statues and the hourglass on the corner shelves. Then it will turn and expose the birdhouse.

Is there a handle to this hammer? It won't do anything for me

Going from memory....

Yes. The handle was near it. It's under the shelves on the wall, but slightly behind an item on the floor. Very thin light-colored piece of wood....
