I haven't used the box either, and it seems that you can't enter any code in it.

Got 6 gems, read note, entered a random number in the box and it opened (twice), and got out after collecting all the furniture and playing with the light.

Weird game... got out, not sure what really happened... but if you want to know how to get out after you collect all the furniture...

Shut off the light, then as soon as you turn it back on look at the sign at the bottom of your inventory screen, it changed to say "Esc" but you have to click on it fast because it changes back.

Turned light off and message under inventory said escape so pressed and out SUCCESS!
