I have four coins and still not enough weight.

I can't figure out the three columns with handles on them. I think I understand the clue but nothing happens. Can't open that one door in the main room. It's behind that big column.

I've held the lever down for over minute

restarting .. just in case that helps

Thought I had code for door in big room .. but no, not yet.
Just the 8 rooms. Think I'll try something else and come back to this later. May be overlooking something that will jump out at me later.

AHA! The trick is

once the handle is down--click on the lever itself!

and on I go!

I was stuck there too there is a keypad on the left door in the main room-find the combination hint:

The owl helps you find it

got it without any hints (it's not that hard to figure out)
now need to find the square gem...
