Just discovered when

an object is no longer usable the ? disappears

Once you realize this then the rest is very obvious.

played around with those buttons (back & forth--not sure what I did) and got the color code when I shut off the lights

Red/Blue/Orange

Just started playing...

Do you remember what exactly you did to get the code? I've been flipping that switch and hitting the lights but I keep getting the white circle thingy...
