So far I have

pestle, 8 out of 9 plates, salt peter, tongs (used), coal (used), recipe (using) and a match

I just don't get the "checkerboard" clue

I am right with you slerk. I did use the pestle though... you have all you need to use it as well.

in the newspaper

EDIT: I now have

a ball which I assume is a "bullet" for a gun
