With some help the papers start to make some sense.

Those are proverbs:
旅は道連れ世は情け
泣き面に蜂が刺す
楽あれば苦あり
The circle, square, triangle are the missing characters:
世 (yo) 蜂 (hachi) 苦 (ku)
Hachi is 8 in Japanese, the others resemble yon (4) and kyu (9).
Drawer code was 498 (I have no clue why this order).
