I was going along fairly well then lost my game somehow

Glitch!!! would have been a easy out, refreshed twice, and there is Nothing in the safe!!!so if you get stuck this is why:

i had same problem - reloaded and opened safe as the very first thing i did and it had the gun

AS SOON AS you find a 4-digit code, run off and find that safe to use it! (At least that's how it worked for me.)

the glitch is if you dont combine the spray and tape the gun wont be there

I think you just got lucky and it was there, I had them combined twice in a row, and it was not there.
