I have a red key, in two parts, but it still doesn't work... Should it open the big machine, anyway? Or do i need to look for a blue key?

you need to get the blue key to open the machine then use the red key inside

Its hidden in the top corner of the container, which is 1 step up from the ladder placed by the crane. You'll need a crowbar to reveal it =]
