I used the cotton thing

to get the green paint from in between the fridge and the cupboard with the sink

Did that and used all the paints. Still don't know how to open the money box.

What cotton bud thing? where did you get it? I've no idea about the money box-have you found anything to help in the diary? I couldn't understand a word in it!

Used the paints

on the drawing of the cat surrounded by little flowers

and the cotton bud is

under the bed, I think, can't remember exactly

I have used all the paints, have four unused items in my inventory and only space for one new thing but I am completely stuck, I am even unsure how I got where I am

-edit- I found the blue paints

light blue

is in the second drawer, you have to combine the front of the handle with the little metal screw thing

dark blue

drnik the can of pop (?) then crush it by clicking on it, put it in the recycling bin by the cat food/litter, where you'll find a screwdriver. Use it on the round tin on the bookshelf

You need the screwdriver to get the dark blue paint.
Once you have the screwdriver, use it on

the round tin on the bookshelf
