    The first time I followed a link to play a Japanese game on this PC, I automatically got a pop up from Microsoft, which asked me if I wanted to install a Japanese language pack. Of course I installed the package, because I know out of experience you need this pack to view Japanese characters instead of squares. So yes, I have installed a Japanese language pack. I also never experienced problems before when I wanted to play a Japanese game, this is the very first time.

    But perhaps I need to install a specific language pack if I want to play this game? If this could be it, could you maybe please post the link for the language pack you had to install in order to make it work for you?

    Or, a wild guess, should I install files for East Asian languages under…. Start --> Control Panel --> Date, time, language and regional options --> Add other language --> Install files for East Asian languages.

    Oh and when I am on the site of Simple Escaping Game and go to: View --> Encoding, the encoding is selected automatically on :Japanese (Shift -JIS). Changing it to Japanese (Auto-Select) or Japanese (EUC) doesn't make a difference.

    Another thing I forgot the mention is when I visit the site, in the game screen loads something of Java. But when the loading is complete I only see a blank screen with a red cross in the upper left corner.

      Click the x after it tries to load. It should bring up a log that can help pin point where the error is occurring.

        That is the Java Console I mentioned before. But it's all jiberish for me. I am really starting to think that I better can give up on this game. But In case someone can see what is causing the error and knows how to fix it, I will post it. If not I give up.

          Well, I checked this game on my girlfriends computer and it works without any problems. I don't know what is the reason, but since I've already have a chance to play it I won't try any longer load it on my computer.

          Thanks for all help Jack

          Let's see what was all the commotion about this game

          Edit:

                  Adventure, I've been looking around, and I think that this article is about your problem:
                  http://support.microsoft.com/kb/260818/en

                  It seems that this was a problem for Windows 2000 which has been corrected with Windows 2000 Service Pack 1.
                  Now I'm not sure what Microsoft version you are using, and what service pack you have, but maybe it helps you

                  Btw, I'm also using JRE-Version 1.6.0_02 Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM, but have Windows XP, so it seems that it really has to do with the Windows version why some players can't play it.

                      knowlege = power
                      power = energy
                      energy = mass
                      mass=matter

                        Thank you, Mystery. But I have Windows XP as well. I have read this article before and even if this article also would apply to Windows XP I wouldn't have a clue how to fix the problem. The steps to reproduce behavior leave big question marks especially about where to carry out these steps.

                        An article in English I found which might refer to the same problem and applies to Window XP (so far I understand) is: http://www.jroller.com/dannywahlquist/date/20050928
                        But again I wouldn't know where jre/lib/charsets.jar or lib\nre.properties are stored on my PC (made an intern search but I got no results) and how precisely to execute the given solution.

                        This all goes beyond my knowledge. I think it is better to just give up. I don't want that people spend anymore of their time to something which is in fact not really important. Jack already spent more time on this issue then I ever would dare to ask. After all it are only two games which not can be played by a handful of people.

                        But thank you anyway, Mystery. I really appreciate your goodwill.

                            Yes, I had the same problem, same software.
                            Try perhaps version 1.5, I just take a first eye on the scene; seems to be a similiar game, perhaps the same:

                            I'll try it now and look, if the description in this thread is compatible on the new link.
                            Let me see

                            I'm not sure; the most postings are about, how to LOAD this game, not How to play; thing, it's similar - but it runs ;-)

                              It's not the same, it's a sequel to this game
