Well, I've never

held a boiling pot - always had it on the stove or at least a counter. Some very strange things going on. An X-file thing?

I agree with Arch7. While it is possible to "escape" as it is, you cannot get the full depth of this game without knowledge of Japanese. Close to half of the inventory is composed of notes, all that require being found. One of the biggest puzzles of the game (I assume) involves uncovering another note that is behind glass. There's no intuitive to solving the puzzle involving the hidden compartment. And choosing the correct key that doesn't lock three compartments in the inventory is guesswork at best.
