colors vs. numbers

how in the world did anyone figure out the colors into numbers thing?
totally stumped by that one!

There is a walkthrough in post #27 for the English version.
For the Japanese version

you must solve the quotations in order to get the reference between Kanji (Japanese letters) and numerals. And it is also important to know that the Kanji are meaning names of colors also.
As far as you know the English names of the colors, you go through the memos. The Roman numerals (e.g. I, II, III, IV) tell you which letter of the color name (in English!) is relevant for the puzzle. If you go through all 3 memos ...
(memo (1/3):
IIgreen,IVblue, IV gold, IV grey, III green
memo (2/3):
II blue, II blue, I orange, VI yellow, II brown, II yellow
memo (3/3):
III red, I black, III silver, III blue, V white, (end)
... you get the following solution: red, yellow, red, blue
