Just to the left of the fireplace as you're looking at it.. you can see a square on the wall, click on that, enter the code and you can turn fire off and on.

I get a key in a plastic bubble.

You need to put the key in the bubble:

Into the fire first to use it. Once you have the canister and the hammer you can escape.
