that some items show numbers in the comments when clicked. The blue book (bottom shelf) shows 3; the pencil cup on the desk shows 2; the black box on the desk (is it a matchbox?) shows 1. I'm wondering if these relate to the elements/days of the week in the calendar, and therefore to the safe code? For example, could 3 be tree/wood? If that "1" is a matchbox, could that be fire? It's difficult when you can only read and understand a tiny fraction of the text.

No, that's actually a very logical guess. They might have put those numbers in to break the language barrier.
