Sometimes the game is a bit tempermental... You have to click it just right at the bottom of the screen... I also had the problem... Specifically when looking through the window...

to unlock the telescope you need to get the key from the trap door beneath your feet

I can't open the lock from the telescope...

Just wait. After a while the wind starts to blow (you see a leaf flowing on the wind) and then in the left of the window a wire appear. Just click on it, without the knife (it took me long before I found that out). That has to work.

To get the wire, try this.
