How do you get past the first bars?

To open the first bars, you first need to get the stick (in the sand). Then you need the stick to catch fire and become a torch. Now go back to the first room and use the torch on the dark hole.

on the left of the first screen u see a black hole...light the stick adn go right up to the hole and click...it should work

Can someone PLEASE post a walkthrough I'm really stuck..!! I have the flute and burning stick and I can't find the scorpian..! And I've used the burning stick in the hole

That part was a bit tricky. The pool of water turns your torch back into a stick. Use the stick on the gears. Then you can go to the next room without being squashed. The scorpion in there will chase you back out of the room. At this point, you should consider getting your stick back.
