Hmmm, it's strange, when I get the fruit, and leave the room, the fruit is gone in my inventory. A bug or intention?
Well doesn't matter as I figured it out

Okay, then from the first room in the mansion, try

"operate" door to get to other rooms

No worries, happened to me too first
Do that for all doors from now on, although I got stuck on one that was locked. Wasn't able to use many inventory items either, just collected them

When I took the torch and left the cellar, my torch disappeared...was that supposed to happen?

Can figure out how to get into the mansion...any hints?

Yes, I think it was supposed to happen.
How to get into the mansion:

Check the gargoyles at the gates, use something on them
