I keep talking to the old man over and over again but i cant get the monocle from him. How do you get it?

For those following the clues here, there are some steps that cannot be taken until the clue is seen. You can't get the monocle from the old man until you have place the paper on the rock and discover that you need a magnifying glass. Also you can't gather the item for the fire until you have seen the smokescreen on the beach.

I finally finished.

Talk to the nonsense furry funky character (don't remember his name) and notice the parrot on the sign on the beach. The rest is easy...
