I can't go south from first desert area - no arrow pointing south. Only west or north

I am mostly blond .. didn't see the compass. We won't talk about the other color caused by raising 4 kids who during their teens started my hair-warp and many a worried line and scowl crinkle.

Look at the compass at the top left of the screen.
Btw, I still think that you should enter the desert first, and then follow the directions - at least this is how I remember it.

The end part with the race is very tricky.
