After doing that whole space bar panic thing I don't know if I pressed fast enough or not but I don't know what to do after that...Maybe I need to keep starting over the whole game until I press the space bar fast enough to move on?

you have to

be really quick about the spacebar...if you don't hit it right after you put the mirror in the box, the ghost will get you...and you have to hit it many times, rapidly...

I keep getting killed by the darkness...

A round metal thingy, matches, candle (lit), gum (used), mirror (with gum) and the egg shaped thingy. Any hints?

in the vent, you need to collect a couple of things first

you need the gum and the mirror (put them together)
