Also, I don't understand what to do with the poor bird
When you go in and attach the handle, say the numbers are 34215, with a blue background. Click the handle, and the numbers, background, and handle color will all change. If the handle is blue, then you would put down the levers in order from the blue numbers, and push the handle. If you got it right, the first light turns green. If not, push the handle again - but not before you write down the new numbers and new background color.
The numbers and colors will cycle out and you'll get new numbers for each color after you go through them all the first time. It may take you a couple of cycles to get three lights, but when you do, you'll know it.

They're a hint. Each column has a certain number of loops, and that Roman numeral tells you how many loops are in that column. You have to figure the others out for yourself, and that entire 8-digit number is the code.
0 has one loop, 6, has one, 8 has two, 9 has one, and % has two. So say your first column reads 586706. That's 5 loops, so the first digit of the unlock code is 5.

For the bugs
Put 1 check on the board, no more. Race the bugs and if your bug wins the frog gives you flowers.
Done
@Lilli, did you see nin_man's hint earlier
