I won the battle in the first and second mission but stumped at the third. Was able to get the opponent "in the red" at best before being destroyed.

how do i set up the ranged rifle

to use the rifle you have to apply pressure to the top valve to load the bullet up. Then you have to direct pressure to the bottom valve to fire it. It easiest to use the control valve so you control which way the pressure goes.
