Maybe alternate doesn't mean another way...maybe it means the verb form

1. follow in interchanging pattern: to follow each other and take each other's place in a regular pattern
as night alternates with day

yes i thought about this to, but it didnt really get me anywhere. also looed up alternate wrds for backgound in a thesaurus, but againdidnt really get me anywhere...
