I, however, am thoroughly stuck on 20. From the responses people have given it seems I must be missing something silly.

Yes, you have to rotate it in the right position, if only because that makes it easier for you to solve this.
Learn to understand the equations - find the pattern.
The clue on the 2nd pic leads to the solution.
Colors don't matter.
