Well, if I remember correctly wasn't the author of the correct quote French? If so, I'd say that's a definite possibility. And the language part is actually quite a good idea

Well, I tried using Altavista, but all it does is give me the translation for a medieval knight, not a chess knight

I found a site by Googling, but after trying the French word, I don't really know which others to try.

I tried the German, Spanish and Italian words for Knight, those are usually the most often used languages in riddles, I think, but none of them worked

There were some that looked like the word riddle - well, they began 'rid' anyway, but they didn't work either.

That'll be those straws again then.

That's definitely a straw If they were spelled ridder or something like that, that means a medieval knight in Danish at least
