good news for all players stuck on this riddle
I have gone over the entire riddle and made it easier by adding more hints and explanations.
Also got rid of all source hints and replaced them with hidden hints - no need to rammage through that pesky source code any more...
You will feel it mostly in the first half of the riddle, which is now more easier peasier, but still not completely trivial.
The second half still has several challenges left in it, but is also more riddlers friendly now

There are 10 "things" hiding in that grid - I guess you spent some effort trying to find them. That effort was basically pointless. What you really need is the hidden hint (which, again, was not there previously). Try to find a pattern in the grid connected to the number in the hint.

Not that knowing the category will instantly open the door, I still have a better jump start here than those who have suffered this level before me.

After been given several big nudges from none other than the creator of this riddle, I'm still getting nowhere.

count every #th letter, anagram, failed
eliminate every #th letter, failed
circle every #th alphabet and try to make out the pattern, failed

but that will not help you a lot - I suggest you concentrate on the other number in the hint
