  • Leona's Tricky Adventures

"Leona's TA - such a lovely, mentally challenging game!"

Leona'sTricky Adventure from SyA/KTX comes in the typical 2D-pixel-retro-look they used to have 20 years ago, which is simply relaxing and makes everything easier to understand since you are not going to be overloaded with information you don't need like all that supermodern cling-clang-clong-flash-glossy-whatever. But watch out if you think that you are dealing with something that's not going to be a challenge!

Superficially, at the beginning one might get the wrong idea of what the game is about. In fact it is much more sophisticated than it initially seems. The outstanding puzzle mechanic of the game is fascinating and it soon becomes increasingly difficult the further you progress and once you have understood the ins-and-outs, there is no doubt that a fan of puzzle-games will have a lot of fun finding the solutions. The task is "to match two complex patterns using complex mechanics". That's precisely what it is, but I had never come across such a puzzle mechanic before, so I searched the Internet and discovered that the composer of the beautiful music, Chris Huelsbeck, had posted a reference to a 1991 game called Gem'X on his bandcamp-website, which apparently used a similar puzzle mechanic. The publisher, SyA/KTX, states that "Leona's Tricky Adventures is inspired by a clever puzzle game mechanic which was briefly explored in the very early nineties but sadly faded from prominence shortly after." So anyway, it's great to have it back!

In addition to the countless puzzles there is a very nice story with a large and complex over- and underworld where Leona receives rewards for the things she does, e.g. rebuilding a forest. Looks like the developers were also keen to give an educational character to the game. It is debatable whether this is good or not, but I guess that also makes the game suitable for the youngest, even if the puzzles will be really hard for them to solve. On the other hand, what's wrong with a mental challenge for the kids too?

The game is on sale as a single player, but - at the latest when it comes to solving the puzzles - everybody in front of the screen can and will take part of the game. In other words, if you really want to play alone, you should throw everybody else out! Steam still has some copies of Leona's Tricky Adventures in stock and the game is not expensive.

Every time I have played the game I lost all sense of how hours and hours were passing by and at no time did the music get on my nerves. For me this is indeed an indication that I am dealing with a high quality game. Leona is not for shooter-fans, that is absolutely true - but right now there is probably no better game for the whole family or for anyone who prefers to use his head and likes beautiful music! It is a welcome addition to the gamers' scenery and I love it!
