Well, I'm sorry. And all I can show you now is computer gibberish from a help forums with a reply/solution for exactly the same problem:
I edited /etc/fonts/local.conf and added all the > font directories on my system and reran fc-cache and the Japanese > characters began to show up. I think there are Japanese fonts in > /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc. I wish my memory was better but it seems > once I get something fixed I just forget what I did and move on. > teryc
