        • Like Jellybean said we have two kinds. Our "brown" ones do look similar to Switzerland's. The breed is called "Herefords." I love the thick cream you get on top of your milk...from them. Yum. Here is a picture of one for you:

              • Is it originally a German one, the name sounds like that at least

                • Yeah it probably is German. America is a "world melting pot." So most things emigrated in. Farmers probably named the the cows that because they they needed a whole..."stein von das Bier" when they finally got them in for milking at night. Cows are dumb...hehe

                  • Yes, it is. I did some research on cows. The brown-white ones are used for both (meat and milk) and the black-white ones are used for milk (they give most). Both come from Germany.

                    • I'm not suprised to hear they're both German. For the Holsteins my Dad raised, he would use some young stock for meat and most for milkers/breeding. But it is true that the Herefords are used for beef. That breed is more pronounced out west, whereas the ones you find in NY where I came from are more what my family had.

                      • And you haven't taken over the farm?

                        Comment

                        • No, my dad's the one who quit and sold it. It doesn't pay much to be a farmer any more. It's a shame but it's a dying industry in America.

                          • Yes, here aswell. Especially the cheap imports spoil it for them (and also the crazy weather in the recent years). The worst situation is for the farmers in the mountains, some of them are really poor.

                            Hehe, OneBun as cowgirl:
