I am not sure what can be the problem but try this.
Open your MSN messenger. Don't log in, just click on tools, then select "Options" and the select "Connections". You will find the connection tab on the left side, last one.
Click the "Start" tab. The process will start. If you see a red cross then click "Repair". Close the windows and try to log in again.
