Ya, I wouldn't just walk away, either. You almost need to make a deal with a co-worker. (da non-monkey boss and I do it to "save" eachother, too). You have your co-worker/friend come and tell you you have a call on whatever line, or that they need you over at X department, or so and so needs you. Then the man will have to stop talking, you can excuse yourself politely.
