I got really stuck, and none of the board messages were helping. They were talking about a yellow diary and a calendar, which I didn't have, and a melted red-man candle. My red-man just stayed lit and didn't melt. Here is the solution I found:

When you are facing the stairs, there is a shadow of the unicorn. If you click on the left side of that step, just past the tip of hte unicorn horn, it zooms in, and there is a depression in the shape of your figure, for me the gold man. Insert your figure into the depression and press the button below that. A compartment opens. Inside is the famous yellow diary. Then the candle upstairs melts, and you get the key to the main door.
