a bit confused since the letters were in there multiple times, not just enough to spell the word.

Maybe I need to explain it better.

Remove all the letters that are not in the name of the colour. For example, When you insert the red ball, just look at the letters R, E and D. This gives the following;

D-E
E-D
ERR
--R
--D

Now if you draw a line through the letters, you get a number.

If you look at the above you should be able to see the number 4 as it would appear on a seven segment display

if you pick the green,for example,so you need to "highlight" only the laters that are in the word "green"(g-r-e-n)

connect the letters that make up the colours. This will give numbers. The sequence is somewhere else in the room
