Once you enter the well room, zoom the right of the well and there is a trace where you put the fossil. It will stop the water. Then take the fossil back, the water has stopped . You will find two square holes on the left, where you can put the handle.

Are you clicking the drawer with the keyhole in the knob? Do you have the blue key selected?
