Yes, did that, but discovered

my problem was that I had failed to break the compass glass with the hammer first!

get the other balloon? I could only get the one without the note with my rock, and then the string.

Did you get the

string? Tie it to the needle and click on it till it says that it points north. A new screen should open up at the oasis. Find a new rock there.
