Yes.

One is where you find the town, the other is where you plant the seed and it grows into a forest.

Found it where the note told me to go. Now I can't figure out how to use the needle on the string...

Did you read the note in the bottle?

Go to the oasis and examine the needle on the string. It will say something like, the needle points north. Then, a new screen should open up.

rubbish ending!
"it is a town. it survived".
it was a bit annoying to have to find a hammer I couldn't even see!

Try getting the good end instead because normally, you'd expect the bad end to be rubbish.
