I think I figured out the way the codes work.
Of course, if you'd rather stand on your head, that's probably a lot more fun.
Look at the flower symbol - it has eight petals around the edges, and in the center is a square, a diamond, and a circle.
The petals are explained by those two sheets of paper you dipped in the colored water.
The larger petals (I'll call them N, S, E, and W) make the solid dots. According to the first paper, N is one solid dot, S is two, W is three, and E is four solid dots. You only ever use one of these at a time: to make three solid dots, you would only press W, not N, S, and W.
The smaller petals (NE, NW, SE, and SW) make the circle with the dot inside. SE is one circle-dot, NW is two, SW three, and NE is four circle-dots. Same as with the other petals, you only press one of them.
The square makes the two-circle symbol. It's either on or off, there's no number involved.
The diamond makes the three-circle symbol. Same as with the square, it's either on or off.
The solid circle makes the circle symbol with the thick wall. Again, on or off.
So if you saw that you needed to set the flower up for three solid circles, four dot-circles, a three-circle symbol and a thick-walled circle, you would press W, NE, the diamond and the circle in the middle, in any order.
When you get it right, zoom out and look in the upper corners of the room. The buttons you pushed should be highlighted in midair, and will be fading from white to gray if you were correct. If they're just gray, you got it wrong, so give it another shot.
