I replayed it and got out with one thousand keys.
So it is true.

Although I still have no clue how I got out with 1002, and possibly a 1000 and third key.
Glitch maybe.

I got through with 1002 keys, I don't know if I picked another one up. But I got through.
Maybe it glitched me through, when I clicked somewhere, but I know I got through.

Yes, I've replayed, and can confirm that you need to get 1000 keys and then

click on the window

I guess I was lucky to click around there when I first played.
