a red key and opened the panel on the 2nd floor. also found a bendy straw

No..neither

the knife, the syringe and the rubber band..

Use the time on the clock(should be 9:31) on the big green box in the room with aliens. Code is 931 without the colons. Use the tape on the wire in the machine. You can then go to the 2nd floor.
