Click on user cp, it should be pretty straight forward from there..

(User CP is in the top left corner, after that if you don't understand still just click Edit avatar)

Dinaco - Make sure the avatar is within the required size, then if it still does not work open it in paint and resave it as a JPG

Funja - Try making it a JPG and 600x480 pixles then click create new frame and upload
