In the kitchen, what's the deal with the 'lift'? It's in the corner by the window. I found a lever and it fit into some hole to wind it up but it doesn't do anything. Anyone know what it's for?

what is that openable hatchway in the kitchen's wall? i saw something scary coming out from it. it was like a ghost demon. then i closed the hatchway and opened it again. then i saw a air-conditioning duct but i couldn't click anywhere. help?
